Green Thuringian

Finger Thuri 1

Vintage Thuringen Water Razor Hone

With its tapered rectangular shape – this lovely greenish Thuringen water stone is an excellent hand-held straight razor finishing option. It’s a very hard and extremely fine stone that is also very easy to use.

Most people know the Escher name, but what many do not realize is that Escher was a brand name for stones mined in the Thuringia region in Germany. The Escher company selected high-quality stones for use as straight razor finishing stones, and they became the de-facto German razor hone supplier for barbers and discriminating home users.

Alongside Escher, there were other brands that offered fine quality razor hones that were just as good as Eschers, and some companies rebranded stones from Escher under their own name.

Some of the stones quarried in that region found there way into the hands of users without ever having been branded, boxed, or labeled; and this is one of those stones.

The color is comparable to a light or yellow- green type of Escher – it’s a pretty hard stone that’s not too fast - and it is ridiculously fine. This one is quite an over achiever, edges off this one are a little keener than what I’ve experienced from most Eschers, and they’re just as smooth.
