Charnley Forest

Charn Box 1

Boxed Charnley Forest Stone

This boxed Charnwood, or Charnley Forest stone is a very hard and very fine stone that performs exceedingly well as a finishing stone for straight razors. These types of stones are novaculite, and similar to Arkansas stones.

This one is hard, so hard that I had to lap it with SIC powder on a stainless steel plate, and it still took hours to flatten. I’m going to bring the polish on this one up a few steps – right now it’s at about 400x, and I’d like to take it up to 1k.

Even though it’s not fully polished, it imparts a very nice polish on a razors bevel and the resulting edges are extremely keen and comfortable. This is a very high-class stone, and it’s no wonder that someone took the time to make a custom-fit wood box with a top for it. I’ve had several Charns, this is the best one I’ve ever owned.

I suspect that this stone has always been used for sharpening razors; woodworkers usually used them with oil and I do not smell or see any hints oil having been on or near this stone. Or perhaps it’s just so dense that no oil has soaked into it. The box is also seemingly oil-free. I honed several razors using water and a water/soap mix as a medium and the stone performed flawlessly.
