Pike Queer Creek Oil & Water Stone

This is a sandstone whetstone, and it’s fairly coarse. Some say it rates about 800x, others say they’re around 2k or so. The instructions on the label say water or oil can be used as a honing medium. I’ve seen whiter and bluer versions of this stone, this one seems to be more of a light greyish blue in color.

I find that a lot depends on how the stone is lapped, when lapped coarse, say – with 80x w/d paper – this stone cuts very fast and the action is very aggressive. When I lapped it on a super worn out 325x DMT, the stone slowed down and it cut slower and ‘finer’.

This really is more of a tool-grade stone but it can be used for setting bevels on straight razors. Mostly – I like the label. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to lap. Well worth a look for anyone that likes using alternative methods to set bevels or sharpen cutlery or tools.
