The name of this beast is ‘Son Goku’.
Aptly named after a Japanese monster that is also known as ‘Four Tails’ -四尾.
The top component is a 2” wide Black Slickness leather strop, and 3 all-cotton webbing strops complete the assembly.
This all-in-one design was conceived for using pastes to sharpen or tune up the edge of a straight razor. The fabric components make excellent substrates for abrasive compounds, and the leather on top is used for putting the finishing touches on the edge.
An interesting facet of this setup is that the leather wipes off clean fairly easily. Where another type of leather might need to be resurfaced to remove any contaminating abrasive particles, the Black Slickness can usually be cleared with a damp sponge.
