Frictionite 00 Barber Hone

Frictionite 1

Little 00 Frictionite

This is the smaller version of the venerable Frictionite 00 Barber’s Hone.

Arguably one of the best of this type of hone ever made, this example is in really nice condition. Even though it offers less real estate than its bigger brother, touching up an edge on this stone is easy enough to manage and it becomes nearly invisible in a Dopp kit or travel case.

Like all barber hones, they were intended to be used by barbers to keep their razors cutting well. These are fast stones, just a few passes brings the edge back, and a good amount of stropping afterwards is highly recommended. I’ve not had the chance to test the theory – but many have said that barber hones can keep an edge going for decades.

Originally, these 00 hones were manufactured by the American Hone Co. in Olean NY. At some point in their history, the company moved to Iowa where they continued to manufacture all of their hones, including the 00 Frictionite.

Visually there does seem to be a bit of a difference between the Olean, NY and Moravia, Iowa versions. In use, the older and later versions do seem to be about the same. I’ve had several of these hones, from both factories, and all of them have been exceptional. They’re fast and the finishing sides are really quite fine.

This particular example is lapped and working well. Its been conditioned with mineral oil and both honing surfaces are in very good shape. The sides do show a few splits but every one of these that I’ve handled has had those superficial lines; I’m not sure why though. For peace of mind, I sealed the sides with clear lacquer right after the photo above was taken.
